War Production Board Poster: Manpower Lost in 1941 - Shop Accidents Deprived Our Fighting Forces of. . . for Victory's Sake - Stay on the Job!

Original Title/Caption:  "Manpower Lost in 1941 - Shop Accidents Deprived Our Fighting Forces of: 7 Extra Battleships, 3,750 Extra Heavy Bombers, 7,500 Extra Fighter Planes, 11,250 Extra Light Tanks. For Victory's Sake - Stay on the Job! They Must Have Electric Motors to Run the Machinery to Make It!"

 

Description: The header of this World War II poster reads, “Manpower Lost in 1941 – Shop Accident Deprived Our Fighting Forces of.”  The upper two-thirds of the poster features a yellow background. All of the header is in blue letter, except “Shop Accidents,” which stands out in red lettering.  A chart in the center of the poster reads, “7 Extra Battleships, 3,750 Extra Heavy Bombers, 7,500 Extra Fighter Planes, 11,250 Extra Light Tanks.”  A drawing of each piece of military machinery fills out the chart, which also features red and blue lettering.  Under the chart, the poster features a blue banner that reads, “For Victory’s Sake – Stay on the Job!,” in yellow and white lettering.  The bottom third of the poster has a white background, bordered in red, and reads, “They Must Have Electric Motors to Run the Machinery to Make It!,” in bold black lettering.   This poster was produced roughly between 1942-1943.

Historical discussion: This World War II poster again links the home front with the battlefield.  Viewers are told that workplace accidents “deprived our fighting forces” of necessary armaments and that “for Victory’s Sake” workers needed to be safe on the job.
