Original Title/Caption: “Industrial safety. Accident prevention. This shop worker is ‘asking for it.’ The use of a makeshift ‘ladder’ like this is always hazardous--doubly so when heavy, bulky, or unwieldy objects are being put in place or removed.”

 

Description: In this black and white photograph, one sees the legs and feet of a person who has climbed atop a stack of crates and boxes to reach the top of a set of shelves. This photograph was taken in June 1942 by Howard Liberman.

Historical discussion: The original title/caption of this photograph explained that this worker was “asking for it,” emphasizing that the worker’s own carelessness would cause injury.
