Original Title/Caption: “Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (vicinity). Westland coal mine. Enroute to work.”

 

Description: This black and white photograph shows nine coal miners on their way into the mines.  In the center of the photograph, six miners are seated in a cart, called a man trip.  In the background, three other miners are visible.  Each miner wears a hat and headlamp.  This photograph was taken in November 1942 by John Collier.

Historical discussion: With the threat of fires, explosions, collapses, and falling rocks, coal miners faced incredibly dangerous working conditions.  A single disaster could kill an entire shift of coal miners.
