These images detail the daily lives of early 1900 industrial workers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The lives of these people revolved around the steel industry

Photographs from this study are broken down into several sections:

• Images of the workers themselves, men and women.
• Images of the workers families; wives and children.
• Images detailing the daily working conditions of the steel workers.
• Images of the living conditions that the workers and their families endured; workers and families inside their homes, children and families outside in the working neighborhoods, and those men forced to survive outside of the system.
• Images of the workers and their families at play.

Many of the photographs in The Pittsburgh Survey were taken by the eminent photojournalist Lewis Hine.
