Sharing the Burden

The antisuffragist activists argued that suffrage would destroy the American family and that suffrage was part of a larger effort of some women to destroy all sexual differences. With that in mind, what do you think this artist was trying to convey with this illustration of a men and women sharing the burden of government while the family thrives on the foundation of woman suffrage?

How might the anti-suffrage activists have responded to this same cartoon? Be sure to pay attention to the children in the image.

How does this second cartoon portray women's burdens? Her packages include "centuries of the hardest, most unremitient and least paid manual labor the human race has ever known," "false social standards," and a small baby. wpe2D.jpg (14630 bytes)
