Progressive Republicans and the Tariff

The Progressive Republicans' agricultural constituents felt threatened by the specter of cheap Canadian wheat flooding the American market and depressing prices and farm incomes.    Already upset with Taft, this issue fostered the formation of a "Progressive Republican League" and talk of opposing Taft's renomination in 1912.  Their preferred candidate was Senator Robert LaFollette of Wisconsin.

In the meantime, the tariff had seriously wounded Taft.
