Berger on the Tariff

Victor L. Berger, the Socialist party's sole congressional representative, spoke on the tariff to the House of Representatives on July 18, 1912:

"WE LOOK UPON THE TARIFF AS A SHAM BATTLE"

". . . we look upon the agitation for a low tariff or for a high tariff as a shameless humbug when we compare its importance with the exploitation of labor . . . .

Is it surprising that we look upon the return of the tariff issue as simply a sham battle to divert the attention of the workingmen from the main issue?"

From Socialist Campaign Book (Chicago: Socialist Party, 1912): 250
