Theodore Roosevelt had previously served as United States President from 1901-1908,
gaining the countrys highest office after William McKinley was assassinated in
Buffalo, New York.
The youngest president to serve until then, Roosevelt brought a
new energy to the position; with this new energy came some new hopes as well. Roosevelt's
early actions generated cautious optimism among African Americans about the new president.
With their support he was reelected in 1904.
