For Direct Democracy

There were many expressions of support for the idea of direct democracy.   The idea of direct democracy was also very divisive, as this cartoon, scanned from Judge, May 11, 1912 indicates.

One of the most controversial involved the recall of judges.   Theodore Roosevelt supported the recall.  When he spoke to the Ohio Constitutional Convention early in 1912, he openly supported the recall of judges in his speech, "A Charter of Democracy."  TR's support was a final blow to his former friend, William Howard Taft, who was adamantly opposed to the idea.
