About John Woitkowitz: John Woitkowitz completed his undergraduate studies at the Freie Universität Berlin in Germany, focusing on North American and Latin American Studies as well as Modern History. As a recipient of a scholarship by the Freie Universität, he spent the academic year 2008-2009 at the Ohio State University. He defended his M.A. thesis entitled “Arctic Sovereignty and the Cold War: Canada-U.S. Relations and the Establishment of the DEW Line” in June 2009.
Specializing in diplomatic history, John explores in his thesis how Arctic sovereignty issues shaped Canada’s negotiations with the United States about the establishment of the Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line), a radar chain constructed in the Canadian Arctic during the 1950s to detect and deter potential nuclear attacks by the Soviet Union.
