A Moment in Time

A Moment in Time is a series of theatrical audio clips in the style of early news radio broadcasts, covering events from Henry VIII to Hiroshima. Created by Dan Roberts starting in 1993, they are short "moments in time" that capture the feel and timbre of 1940s wartime radio.

A Moment in Time Archives: Japan Surrenders (1945)

Volume: 2 Number: 141 Date: 01/01/1900

Lead: On September 2, 1945 representatives of the emperor, the army and the government of Japan unconditionally surrendered on the deck of the battleship Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay.

Tag: A Moment in Time with Dan Roberts.

Content: Presiding at the surrender ceremony was Supreme Allied Commander General Douglas MacArthur.

MacArthur speaks: 65 seconds

After Japan signed, and MacArthur signed for the allied powers, the general spoke for many.

MacArthur speaks: 18 seconds.

After six years and a day, the Second World War was over. Over 50 million people had perished in the most destructive conflict in history.
