The Ottoman Empire
Only 80 years separate the modern Middle East from the forgotten and long-lived Ottoman Empire. Over a time span of six hundred years, from about 1300 to 1923, the Ottoman Empire expanded into the largest political entity in Europe and western Asia and then imploded and disappeared into the back pages of history.

Balfour Declaration
The Balfour Declaration was a letter from Arthur Balfour, the British foreign secretary, to Lionel Rothschild, one of the leaders of the Zionist movement. The letter formalized the support of the British government for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. During World War I, the declaration was supported by the major Allied powers.

The Medina Charter (Dustar al-Madinah)
The earlest recorded constitution, the Charter concerns the rights and responsibilities of the Muslim, Jewish, and other Arab and tribal communities of Medina during the war between that city and its neighbours.
