Suez War (1956)

Also known as:   Sinai Peninsula War; The 1956 War

Date(s):   1956

Description:
The Suez War was fought from October 29 to November 6, 1956. Previously, in July Egypt took control of the Suez Canal. Britain and France then agreed to re-capture the canal by force and entered into secret discussions with Israel in order to conceal their attack within a broader Arab and Israel conflict. On October 29 Israeli forces attack Egypt troops in Sinai. On October 31 British and French aircraft bombed Egyptian naval bases in preparation for an airborne attack. The attack was called off after international pressure. In March Israeli forces left Sinai.
