Search Help

SIMPLE SEARCH
1. Type the word you are looking for in the text box. Example-"Napoleon" or "Vicksburg"
2. Press "enter" or click on the "Search" button.
3. Each result will show the beginning of that page. The URL of that page will be highlighted.
4. Click the highlighted URL to view the page of your choice.
NOTE: many times the word you're searching for won't appear in the summary text that shows. In this case the search term is somewhere lower on the page. Also, some words are the root of another word. A search for 'Grant' will find the word "granted" since 'Grant' is part of it.
5. To view more results (if any), click "More" at the bottom of the results screen.

COMPLEX SEARCH

Steps:
A complex search uses logic terms such as "and," "or," but," and "not" and are useful for narrowing a search topic. For example, someone may wish to search for Shiloh, North Carolina and not want all the references to Shiloh, Tennessee. A complex search for Shiloh, North Carolina in the Civil War section of the site would look like the following:
Example 1:
Shiloh and North Carolina not Tennessee
The results are 7 references to Shiloh, North Carolina without any mentions of Shiloh, Tennessee.
Example 2: Shiloh and North Carolina
The results returned 13 references to Shiloh, North Carolina with Tennessee mentioned somewhere on the page.
1. Type the words you are looking for in the text box separated by "and," "or," "but," or "not". Example-"Napoleon and Russia"
2. Click the "search button."
3. Each result will have a brief summary of the result and the URL will be highlighted.
4. Click the highlighted URL to go to the result of you choice.
5. To view more results (if any), click "More" at the bottom of the results screen.

WILDCARDS
Searches can also use wildcards such as an asterisk "*" and question mark "?"
A search like "olu*" returns 74 results for Olustee.
A search like "olus???" also returns 74 results for Olustee.
A search for "Peric*" returns 68 returns for Pericles in the World Section

NOTE: quotation marks are not necessary to search.

A search of
"23rd Michigan or twenty-third Michigan" returns 80 results as does
"23rd Michigan" or "twenty-third Michigan".

DATE FORMAT

If you want to search for something by date, you need it in the right format. For instance, a search for "11 April 1862" returns no results, "1862 11 April" brings up one result, but "April 11 1862" produces several hundred.
"11 August 1914" returns 109 results in the World history section while 11 August 1914 returns zero.

CIVIL WAR REGIMENTS
For civil war regiments, the number was sometimes spelled out; sometimes it was done with numbers. You should use a complex search to find all references.
A search for "thirty third Virginia" found 50 references
"33rd Virginia" found 41 references
"Thirty-third Virginia or 33rd Virginia" found all 91
